HotlineGreen factories are gradually becoming an essential trend in the context of industrialization and the explosion of commercial and service activities, which have serious environmental impacts. Therefore, building and establishing green factory systems is considered one of the significant transformations for manufacturing enterprises in Vietnam to effectively achieve sustainable development goals.
A green factory is a comprehensive concept where multiple aspects related to design, construction, and operation are integrated to achieve performance and sustainable development. Additionally, the designs and processes of green factories vary depending on the type of factory and climate conditions. Green factories also ensure that worker productivity is improved through green health standards without impacting the natural living environment.
Green factories incorporate mechanisms through which both construction waste and post-use waste are efficiently processed, thereby minimizing pollution and enhancing the quality of the surrounding environment. Currently, up to 61% of leaders in domestic and international organizations believe that sustainable development is a pioneering trend, creating market differentiation and improving financial efficiency for businesses.
At present, there are many green certifications, with the three most popular being LOTUS, LEED, and EDGE. Below is an overview comparing some criteria of these certifications.
Among green certifications, LEED stands out compared to LOTUS and EDGE due to its higher popularity and more comprehensive evaluation system. Additionally, LEED is superior in categories related to health convenience and environmental impact. One of the advantages of LEED is its lifetime validity, allowing businesses to register once and use it almost indefinitely. This simplifies the green certification process compared to LOTUS, which requires renewal every five years.
Moreover, as LEED is a U.S. green building certification, and a significant proportion of Vietnam's exports go to the U.S., choosing a "home team" certification is a safer option for sustainable development businesses. Utilizing LEED green building certification provides a competitive advantage, especially in demanding markets, enhances market credibility, and offers leverage in government procurement decisions, particularly as Vietnam supports the United Nations COP26 Conference.
There are currently four types of LEED certifications with the following point scales:
LEED Certification (40-49 points)
LEED SILVER Certification (50-59 points)
LEED GOLD Certification (60-79 points)
LEED PLATINUM Certification (Above 80 points)
Energy and Atmosphere: Accounts for one-third of the total points in LEED certification. It is the key factor in defining a green factory. The council evaluates the use of green and recycled energy, such as solar rooftop power.
Water Efficiency: Includes measuring the usage of sanitary equipment, irrigation, water recycling, toilet flushing, etc.
Location and Community Connectivity: Factories are evaluated based on their location's connectivity with community activities, such as nearby amenities like service kiosks, supermarkets, banks, bus stations, etc.
Regional Priority Credits: Applicable to countries with priority regions, including Vietnam.
Materials and Resources: Involves using recycled, eco-friendly materials and waste management during operation.
Indoor Environmental Quality: Includes using odorless paint, low-impact dyes, and features that prevent dust from entering the factory.
Sustainable Site: Features like electric vehicle charging stations, bicycle parking, and at least 25% greenery to facilitate factory commuting, reduce environmental pollution, and lower the surrounding temperature.
