CS stands for Recycled Claim Standard. This is a voluntary international standard, commonly used in the recycling sector today, aimed at tracking recycled inputs through the supply chain.
The RCS standard was developed by Textile Exchange and the Outdoor Industry Association Sustainable Materials Traceability Working Group in 2013 and is currently administered by Textile Exchange.
RCS does not address social or environmental aspects of processing and production, quality or legal compliance. This is a standard that focuses on verifying input materials and chain of custody for products made from recycled materials.
STANDARD CRITERIA RECYCLING STATEMENT
RCS certification ensures:
Composition Declaration Standard (CCS Standard) requirements: require each organization along the supply chain to take adequate steps to ensure that the integrity and identity of incoming materials are maintained.
Traceability from recycling to final product
Only products with at least 5% recycled content are eligible for product-specific RCS labeling.
RCS certification provides two product labels:
RCS 100: RCS 100 ensures that the product contains 95-100% recycled content without any uncertified materials of the same type.
RCS BLENDED: RCS Blended guarantees that the product contains 5-95% recycled content with no other restrictions on residual content.
SCOPE OF RCS CERTIFICATION
RCS applies to the following industries:
Recycled garments, clothing and final textile products
Recycled home textiles
Recycled fabric
Recycled yarn
Recycled metal
Recycled Plastic
Recycle paper
Recycled ingredients in textile products must receive full identification and traceability along the entire chain of custody. Each stage of production is required to be certified.
PURPOSE OF RCS CERTIFICATION
Increase the use of recycled materials to promote sustainable consumption and production models that reduce resource consumption.
Verify recycled content in products.
Provides a tool for companies to validate and communicate sustainability claims about their products.
BENEFITS OF RCS CERTIFICATION
Build credibility, protect your brand and have confidence in your sourcing.
Independent, transparent, consistent and comprehensive assessment and verification of recycled material content in products.
Push the industry to move faster to make progress on sustainability goals.
Provides a reliable guarantee to the end consumer
Positively contribute to sustainable development
HOW TO ACHIEVE RCS CERTIFICATION?
RCS certification relies on third-party verification to confirm whether a product includes the appropriate amount of recycled materials.
Organizations wanting RCS certification need to contact a certification organization authorized by Textile Exchange to apply for certification. This organization will manage the entire certification process, from start to final labeling and communications.
General process:
Choose a certification body
Contract
Read standards and prepare relevant documents
Meet with an expert for evaluation after good preparation
Review documents and procedures according to RCS requirements
Wait for evaluation results
Fix if there are inappropriate points
Receive a scope certificate (SC) when all requirements are met
Prepare for unannounced inspections to verify compliance with standards
Contact the certification organization to apply for a trading certificate
